I'm leaving for the north east, to spend a couple of weeks in the timeless limbo of an ancient little town. I'll be back January 4th, to implement a few changes in here, like I did last year... Merry Christmas to all of you. And Happy New Year.
Bits and pieces of my life that everyone ignores when I speak, but someone reads when I write.

Insomnia.
Triggered by that powered-up version of the sickness that visited me when I stopped seeing the shrink. It has an obvious conection with our yearly visit to our relatives in the north-east. Every time we get ready to go, I get sick. Sometimes it happens when I'm there. But this time, it´s the same sickness, teaming up with this ever growing whisper that beckons me to end my life. Yesterday, at grandma's early christmas dinner, I gave in to my monster and scurried to the bathroom to get rid of the nuisance in my stomach. I once believed it could lessen the symptoms. But I discovered terrified yesterday that it does little or no difference. So today, I'm here... Trying hard to hold it all in while it digests. I hate eating... It seems to be all the more terrifying at night for some reason. In daylight, it isn't so bad. But at night it drives me insane. Someone make it stop...
I think about going to that now not so timeless place in the north-east and it frightens me to think that it might be even worse up there. Specially now with so many emotional complications that could intensify my nightly suffering: the end of one of my university courses that brings a next year full of doubts, and the ghost of aunt Margot.
I don't believe in ghosts. Not in the common sense, anyway. I believe that, when a person recently dies, their loved ones, and specially the people who lived with the person, are in such ways traumatized by the loss, that they reach that state in which everything reminds them of the recently deceased. They obssess. So it wouldn't be uncommon to hear the person's voice, like one can hear a song one has been singing far away in the distance and believe it was real. Likewise, it would be perfectly normal, with so many references, to dream about the deceased.
This severe state of mourning is the closest thing for me to being haunted.
Will we be haunted up there?

Assim termina a história...

Quizzes!!
Long time since the last one, huh?

SNIPER: You love your gun. Maybe a little too
much, but you're very, very good at handling
him/her. See that mosquito on that wall 200
yards away? I bet you could hit it if you
tried...
Which Type of Assassin Are You?

Woo!!
Yeah, I used to be a pain in the butt to other Counter Strike players....

It's been a long time since she cut her hair. And it did her some good: she now looks all the more like some film noir actress. It suits her. Even though she has changed her behaviour into somethimg more Bossa-Nova-like.
She seems happier too. I'm glad.
The nickname I used for her no longer seems fitting. I get that feeling of inadequacy every time I have to write it in here. It's not her anymore. So I guess I'll change it to the name we all know her by.
Or perhaps I'll just cut the crap and stop calling people by nicknames.
But I'm getting off the subject.
I've dreamed of her. And of other important people. The girls in the university bare an odour of cigarettes that reminded me vividly of her flesh a few nights ago. And then the other day, I was hit by that feeling of helplessness, of being in the world for no reason and having to deal with my organic body. It made me sick. Those things that only she understood and shared. The old her, I mean. I'm not sure this new her still feels or cares about these things.
Ignore this. I'm just wondering if she still visits this Neverland.

Gente amarga. Cansado de querer tanto participar daquele mundo dela e me frustrar.
Get a life.

Apenas quem nasce e quem morre. Aquele lugar faz parte do nosso inconsciente.

Aquele lugar faz parte do nosso inconsciente.

Been listening to Eric Satie's Gnossiene series while I wrote the gaduation papers. To anyone who's not aware, Satie plays the piano. I got aquainted with his work through my brother, naturally. But brother played his more lighthearted tunes. Gnossiene is a series of six short pieces. Numers one, three and four are that kind of suspense music used in movies where the killer is a mentally unstable person, given to his strange obsessions. I pictured myself running my brush on those canvases, obsessing with each girl's face. The tiny details: a dot of reflected light on the lips, the precise curve of a chin, the correct tone of shadow. I felt like the maniac that haunted Lilly with a camera.
The other three of Satie's tunes are suitable for a walk in the park, when the day is so windy that the dry leaves come loose off the branches and rain down in oblique patterns. Cold gray days that nonetheless carry some strange, almost british melancholic joy. Tunes for feeling old.

Bom...

E parecia-me absurdamente familiar.

Morfina on tap.

So much for intermission....

Marina was great. In fact, this was perhaps one of the best birthdays I've had in a long time. But I'm not going to go into it in full detail. Let's just say there were business propositions for next year, great sushi, more on my trip to the US, cuddling with Tink, and Marina.
My Tinkerbell couldn't have picked a better gift (which reminds me I'll have to work my ass off to get something even remotely as good for her birthday in December....). We sat in good seats, not too far from the stage, but far enough not to see her face in full detail. Reminds me, when I saw Bowie, I was so far away that if it had been some generic blonde old guy up there, I wouldn't have noticed. But just as the show ended and the crowd roared for an encore, some of us got up from our seats and headed down to the front of the stage. It was her alright! In full detail! She gave us two more of her greatest hits.
She has something that brings back the memory of Dora. It's something bigger than the fact that they're both edgewalking, ass-kicking women. It's something in their presence, their entities. It's their melancholy: both have that constantly fed up mood. Which doesn't mean they are annoying. On the contrary: makes them all the more interesting. And there's something about their figures too. It's a dark presence. Lots of contrast, lots of blacks and whites. Very little color.
But of course, I've been known for making weird comparisons....

Happy birthday to me.....
Of course, this is supposed to be the crappiest birthday ever. I'm a week away from delivering my graduation project, which still needs a few tweaks, and most of the guys went to one of those university sport events out of town. Mom is on a business trip somewhere. So ya, I'm slightly depressed.
Luckily I have my little Tink, my saviour. She got me tickets to see Marina, one of my favourite female singers. And I spent the first few hours of today in the company of her friends from film school, a jolly little bunch. We laughed our asses off and for a moment, I was gleeful.
And now, back to our intermission.

The body can endure only a certain amount of physical exercise. And it must slow down before stopping. A sudden stop bring all kinds of strange symptoms. At first, there`s this notion of experiencing the entire body. One does not feel the entire body all the time. It`s part of the body`s system to ignore it`s own existence. Or else, it would be stimulated to the point where it would go mad. Schizophrenia includes the lack of this ability to ignore your own body. Overstimulation: everything is analized constantly. Anyway, after exceding your limit of exercise, there first comes this sense of physicality. Being present, being an organism. That sense that usually triggered my old sickness. But then, as the blood pressure drops, this physicality grows. You feel heat waves and the body beggins shutting down whatever peripherals it can to save on energy: the stomach stops digesting and you feel you`re imminently going to throw up. Arms work at a minimum strength and begin shaking. Your legs, somehow, still hold you long enough to reach the bathroom, but once you get there, their efficiency plunges to a minimal percentage. When you finally decide to collapse on the ground, sitting up or lying down, and the blood is allowed to flow easier, the last peripherals will shut down: eyes close almost instinctively and your hearing almost shuts down completely. You still hear things, but you don`t listen: any effort to pay attention on something is directed to analyzing and comprehending the body`s current status, understanding what went wrong, supressing the panic, devising strategies to resolve the situation. There`s barely enough energy for imagination. All you can do is feel the blood flow through the body and collect enough energy to return to working condition.
After a while, you reboot the system and get up. You work at 30% at first. But as the hours pass your percentage rises.
Systems check:
Musculatory..................55%
Digestive.......................65%
Logic.............................80%

Must be the third blog I read where the writer (a woman in her early twenties, late teens always...) suspects she has a borderline personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder is characterized by mood swings, poor self-image and bouts of anger. Often, they will take their anger out on themselves. Hence, suicidal threats and actions are not uncommon. They think in terms of right or wrong, having almost no gray area. Now find me a girl in her late teens, early twenties who doesn't suffer from poor self-image, mood swings (specially when PMS is involved...) and bouts of anger (common in a stress-ridden society like ours...). Is every girl troubled with a borderline personality? Hardly...
See, that's why these personality disorder tests are so convincing. You can relate to at least a couple of personality disorder symptoms.
Likewise, take your average man of the same age. Men in this age, venturing into their careers and more intense personal life, are supposed to be tough, cold, completely logical and 100% correct (even when their logic has a few errors here and there...). They have no feelings except for those associated with anger and competition. Machines. Sounds a bit like a schizotypal personality, doesn't it? Schizotypals are supposed to engage in strange thought patterns, have an overall apathetic behaviour, or so-called "constricted affection" (no feelings... or none of the common responses, anyway), causing them to have a hard time with close relationships. There are those more intense cases which include belief in magic other than that present in myths, unusual perceptual experiences (illusions) and incoherent or overelabrate speech. But let's keep to the basics. Is every man slightly schizotypal? Hardly...
Am I? Possibly not...

This whole thing about the art course feels like being inside a TV series. Art & me or something... See, we've had four seasons so far, each with their own highlights. You've seen the main character evolve and go through a lot of memorable moments. Now we're in the last few episodes of the fourth season, and there's this climax, this major event: the graduation. An event that ends the fourth season of the show, to be aired between December 10th and 17th. And then there's that common question: will the producers sign a contract with the actors (a.k.a. me...) for another season of the show? Will there be a fifth season of Art & me (what a corny name for a show...) showing what happens to the character and his art outside the Foundation's envirorment? Or is that it: the show ends and is replaced by another show, called Advertising or something? I mean, the graduation would make a nice ending for the series. But it doesn't close the story definitely.
Putting it simple, for you who lack imagination: am I going to keep studying art and doing stuff next year? I honestly don't know. We gotta go with the flow and see what happens.

About the trip to Italy
I spent the semester taking care of all the details: from passports to crash-courses in italian. My part of the deal was done. And the, last night, mom and dad sat down with me and old me the obvious: it`s too expensive to send me to Europe at the present time. Right... At least mom can`t brag about my not doing anything about it...
So we started searching for other, cheaper possibilities. The asked me what kind of course I was looking for, be it in arts or advertising, and we searched the web for something related. Eventually, I found an interesting ad-related course: art direction with the Miami Ad School. They have courses in many different cities, ranging from San Francisco (and then I thought: Aerandir!!!) to.... my home town!! Cool... So this means I`ll probably be taking the course right here. Anyhow, mom still wants me to travel, to see the world. It`s ironic: most moms freak out when their children talk about traveling. And at the rate things are going, I`m probably just going to travel the US, without any course as an objective.
Arrivederci, Italia.
Howdy, USA...

Me sociabilizar.
A mãe dela esbarrou nessa última seleção.
Me aproximei bastante dessa turma hoje.

"What is out there?" she asked
"The vast human stupidity" was all that Worth could answer...

Continuing my weekend movie rampage, I've rented Cube, as once suggested by Makel. I'll admit I wasn't too hopeful about this one and was frankly looking fore something more challenging to the mind. Boy, was I in for a surprise!
In a nutshell, the movie brings six characters who never met before trapped in a math-based prision that consists of thousands of cubic rooms put toghether. Some have traps, others don't. And they'll have to cooperate to get out. But that's not all of it. There are other variables. But I don't want to spoil your surprise. Watch the movie!
Highlights:
To start, let's talk about the production. I've never seen such a brilliantly simple production. Since all the thousands of rooms look alike (except for the color of the lighting), all they needed were four rooms to shoot the whole thing. Imagine this: there's the room where the actors are, one above them, one below them, and one on the sides, which could be used as any of the four rooms on the side of the one they currently stand. Aside from that, there's a few obviously computer generated backgrounds when they leave the cube. Deviously simple.
Now, to deal with the plot. I figured there's some reference to reality shows in the whole thing, but above all, I couldn't help remembering my dearest friend Jean Paul Sartre! I mean, people who've never seen each other having to cooperate to coexist!! It's a clear reference. And plus, the plot offers us no reason for those people to be there. Nor any record of how they got there in the first place. It doesn't even show you what's outside the prision! Can it get any closer to existentialism than this? No bigger meanings, no reason, no punishment for your actions. Just the here and now.
I miss my days of rehearsing for Huis Clos...

A Crucificação, David e Golias, a Anunciação, Vênus. Essas coisas.
Me diverti muito nesse curso.

Makel:
I argued much with Tinkerbell in order to to do this one. It was the first portrait in which I painted a background (Jeez, that was tough!).
I'll start with the subjective context. When we were toghether, me and Makel, we loved to go over to this pizza restaurant in the city where she lived. It was great pizza at low prices. The place, with it's huge windows and open space, seemed to remind me of Hopper's Chop Suey painting when the four o'clock sun hit the windows.
Of course, reality was a whole different thing. She no longer dressed like that, or had time to go to that place again. She was now a busy law student who was also taking care of her soon-to-be fiancée. So I had to meet her somewhere, photograph her, then ride to her city to photograph the restaurant. All that coupled with the fact that I wasn't painting in canvas. But that's a more technical side. I'll explain.
I wanted to paint a portrait to explicit how we view images. The difference between figure and background.
When I separated foreground and background, this whole experience grew stronger. This painting has an amazing depth. First, because even though at first you cannot consciously notice the two layers of acrylic, your eye notices a difference. And it brings the first layer forward. Also, the first acrylic adds a haze to the second layer, like a fog, turning pure black into a grayish thing. That's atmospheric perspective (See Da Vinci's paintings....). Finally, Makel's image is in perfect focus, while the background is a little fuzzy. That's what happens in the human eye: you can't focus everything at once (this comes from my photography lessons at the advertising course: thanks, Luli!).
Quite frankly, I don't think I'll paint anything this enticing in the next two months...
Methodless:

I usually help Methodless with her work, taking some of the photographs or recording performances on tape. There was this one photo where she hung a canvas on the wall, flooded it with white acrylic paint and sat under it, while it dripped all over her. It turned out to be a very nice picture. And one that has been presented on two or three occasions in which she was called to expose her work. After the photo was taken, she had no more need for that canvas, and I asked her to give it to me. I removed the excess paint and waited for it to dry. Still, there was yet to come an image of her that would inspire me to paint. It took a year, but eventually I found one of her photos that was just right. It matched with a few idea I had. When I saw this picture of her face with that yellow rectangle painted on it, I remembered notes and sketches I had done on my notebooks about the transparency of oils. Things that I had learned from Tink's portrait. When I painted this one, I painted the yellow rectangle first. After it had dried, I painted over it Methodless' face with a paint that was so diluted, it almost didn't change the yellow beneath it.
Using oils over acrylics was a new discovery. After the acrylic had dried up, it had made the canvas' surface very irregular. I used sand paper to correct this. As a result, the oil acumulated on the scratches, creating lines that resembled scratches in old photos. A nice effect. Also, the brush ran smoother on this new surface than it did on regular canvas.
I know there are no great experiments in this one. No great philosophy. But sometimes you have to do the simple stuff to learn the lessons that'll lead you to the great stuff. Of course, one question does spring to mind: If it's her canvas, her photo and in part her paint, how much of this work actualy belongs to me?

New batch of portraits!!
As you've probably read, I've been working my ass of this semester for my graduation in the art course. Up 'till now, I've managed five portraits in three months. A record. Not to mention the fact that I've done in one year more than I did the last three years put toghether. That's what happens when you got a deadline. Anyway, I'm posting the latest portraits. Two of them won't be in the final project, so I won't even post them here.
To start, I've repainted the Blonde Muse:

Did her in acrylics. The original version was a mess of oils and acrylics that made the hole thing look dirty as hell. Besides, acording to what I wrote about acrilycs when I painted the Fairy, she was supposed to be painted only in acrylics because she was only an aquaintance, not an actual close friend.
More portraits to be posted later...

An artistic dilema:
My works cost resources to be made. Specifically money and time. Likewise, decent personal growth also costs money and time. I want to travel the country, meet new people, see new places. Yes, I know there's much to be done in the city as well, and I will try it also.
In a utopic scenario, I could spend one week producing and one week traveling, observing, being inspired. But alas, for the time being, I have a deadline. And I must produce non-stop until November 21st. Which means that I have little more than a month to produce my last three paintings for the graduation project. All my resources (extra bucks and time) should be focused on it.
But I'm straying from the point: the thing is, an artist must learn to balance production and inspiration. Form and content.
And I've been feeling hollow lately....

This week's movie:

Oversimplified summary:
This gang lord gets betrayed by his gang and ends up in jail. He undergoes an experimental rehabilitation program that messes with his subconscious. He is set free after the tests show that he is uncapable of commiting an act of violence: he feels sick whenever his violent instincts arise. But once he is out, the society he had once brutalized turns on him for revenge. But without his instincts, how is he to defend himself?
Gotta say: this one is not recomended for the psychotic minds. Violence here is seen as trivial, senseless, guiltless... And if you have the slightest bit of madness in you, you do start getting some absurd ideas... One thing that intrigued me though, was when father said that he had watched the movie when it was released, and he was about my age. He was appauled. I myself felt a bit disturbed in the beggining, but later on, I sort of got used to it. Goes to show how violence is banalized nowadays. I get to thinking: oder generations used to feel sick at scenes of violence, just as the character did after the treatment. Is my generation free of such mental conditioning, or are we actually more perverted, conditioned to violence?
Anyway, a few considerations regarding the movie.
First of all, I had the clearest impression that they were all russians. From the strange words they'd use, all filled with phonetics similar to those in russian, the constant use of words like "brother" or "comrade" or such, to the eternaly cold weather. This would make the movie into a sort of Cold War critique against the Soviet Union and their rationalist ways to solve social problems like criminality. Of couse there was also a tad of british or irish: their accents, the police uniforms... But I guess that comes from the actors and the locations. The whole russian thing speaks louder.
Apparently to support this, there's a great use of white and red (colors of both socialist parties that began the socialist revolution) all around the movie. I still cannot understand why is it that everything related to the gang is white: they dink milk, they dress in white, most of the backgrounds and objects related to them are white.
There is also some paradoxical identification between the gang leader and the image of Christ: there are red stains in his wrist like the ones in the statues of Christ in his bedroom, he is delivered to the authorities by his own gang... Still couldn't exactly understand that either.
To end this, I'll just leave an observation: there's this figure who seems to be the gang leader's legal councelor or something, called inspector Deltoid (that's the name of a muscle, mind you). The way he speaks reminded me vividly of Watto, the master of young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: episode 1. Peculiar...
I know this review leaves much to be desired, but it's been four days since I say the movie... All the hype is gone by now. Anyway, highly recommeded if you have no psychotic records!

Estarei enviando e-mails...
Vamos lá, gente! É a minha reta final!!

Atitude. Era tanta coisa junta...
Do caderno (Dream):

Spring finally came. And the cold of posts ago diminished. Walking to the girls' atelier has become unbareable in this heat. It seems surreal that only a week ago, the cold discouraged me to arise in the mornings. Now I welcome the chill in my bare arms as I walk to the university at night.
At nigh... This heat at progressed hours of the evening makes my body remember the feeling of summer vacations. And parties at the beach. Passions spawned in cities I only visited once and most likely will never return to, whispered to everyone by that nocturnal breese that blows from sea to land.

Ever since August, I`ve returned to the gym at the club. I wasn`t getting enough of it at home. Down at the club, we get instructors to help us out, correct exercises and give us some tips.
And just as I do in the bus every day, I`ve payed attention to the people there. There`s this old man, probably in his sixties, who seems to be some sort of role model to the people there. Although his face and his hair (or the lack of it...) betray his age, his body remains big, muscled, "young".
To start the day at the gym is revigorating. Even though I get worn out for a couple of hours, my mood improves significantly. I ride to the foundation slightly more... alert. Fewer details evade my attention. I greet people by their names, I smile. There`s attitude in everything I do. There is, alas, less apathy.

Happy B-day, Big Mamma!!
And we were at a bar yesterday to celebrate. A part of the gang was there. Sis was also there and that reminded me that she can no longer be called Sis. They broke up a couple of weeks ago. I`m not going to give much details since it`s obviously none of my business. I talked a lot with my brother after it happened and I understood and agreed with him. And so, brother sat at one end of the table, along with me, Tink and a few others of the gang; and she sat at the other end, along with some two or three boys that I had never seen before but who seemed all too close to her. Brother tried to have fun but couldn`t ignore that. He was bothered. For the record, he broke up with her. But since some of my rationalist bullsh*t from the previous post applies, his behaviour is comprehensible. His former girlfriend was also there. They engaged in some brief chat. Little Wonder was also there. But Alex didn`t show up. And I was noticing once again how this gang was worn out. Each and every one of us had some grudge towards someone else. Scars of long ago love affairs. After all, we had been teenage boys and girls. Put those toghether and mayhem ensues... Even though most of it all was long healed, we`d still get slightly giddy with certain presences. And it would be too hard to have fun once again without meddling with past wounds.

I was immersed in painting the background for Makel's portrait when my phone rang: it was her. Without much delay, she dropped the bomb.
"I'm engaged!"
How is a man supposed to react, or what is he expected to feel, when a former lover who has remained a good friend says she is getting married? I felt bothered. Something that reflected on my painting as hastiness. But I couldn't understand why did it bother me so. I didn't despair enough for it to be love. In fact, Makel had ceased to be the meaning of my existence for years. Others came and took her role, just as someone had taken mine. The natural order of things. Then perhaps it was the male animal instinct to be bothered by the fact that another male was banging a female that once belonged to me and that now I would no longer have access to her. Yes, I know you can't accept this simplistic, gross point of view. Perhaps then it was the feeling of loosing a perfect mother for my children. I used to believe that. But nowadays I have doubts as to her maternal abilities. Plainly speaking, I felt bothered because I no longer had her. Or even the slightest possibility of having her again. Ever. Whatever her importance in my life should be.
I obviously didn't tell her any of this. I wouldn't give her the pleasure of my discomfort. And besides, we hadn't spoken truthfully to each other for quite some time. I only brought up a silly promise we made when we broke up to get toghether again if after seven years we were still alone. That's the end of that...
She asked me to be the best man. It seemed fitting: the last good-bye to a teenage passion. But two other thoughts came to mind. On one hand, this was some cruel last revenge of hers. To hurt me definitely and say "I want you to be there so you can see what you missed!". If so, her fianceé knew it. That is why he agreed in bringing a nemesis so close. On the other hand, I supposed I was the only person she could call. Her only close friend. I spent two years with her and got to know her well. Including the fact that she likes isolation. She trusts no one, hence she cannot nurture a deep friendship. We fought constantly over this. If the world should end, leaving her and her lover as the only survivors, it would be enough for her.
When I hung up the phone, I noticed grimly that the day was September 11th. And in a short epiphany, I realized that in a way, a tragedy just as big as the towers had happened in my little world. Some sort of symbolic thing had died. There was a side of it that said "what a sad day..." But another side said "you asked for it!" Of course, in the bigger scheme of things, this symbolic thing was no longer relevant. And just as the towers, this event would change a few things, but eventually it's impact would be absorbed, making it just a footnote in the hopefully long history of my life.
Aqui começa a história
Saldo do ateliê:
Retratado ainda indefinido...

Random literature...
The passanger seat in my car is a little corner of the world that she makes her own. There's a whole memorabilia of things she casually leaves there. From name tags from the places she no longer works on to origami made from appartment ads handed out to her on the street. Her tube of glitter (pixiedust...) rolls around somewhere when I take a hard right. There have been unbrellas forgotten on the floor for over a month. Or magazines with theatre schedules fluttering with the wind of an open window. And when noon paints the city golden, I can see strands of her hair that are brighter and more golden than the sun lying around.

Afraid, by David Bowie
I wish I was smarter
I got so lost on the shore
I wish I was taller
Things really matter to me
But I put my face in tomorrow
I believe we're not alone
I believe in Beatles
I believe my little soul has grown
And I'm still so afraid
Yes, I'm still so afraid
Yea, I'm still so afraid on my own
On my own
What made my life so wonderful?
What made me feel so bad?
I used to wake up the ocean
I used to walk on clouds
If I put faith in medication
If I can smile a crooked smile
If I can talk on television
If I can walk an empty mile
Then I won't feel afraid
No, I won't feel afraid
I won't be Be afraid
Anymore

When I was a child, I used to be able to hear my heart beating when I lay down to sleep. The pressure created by the pulse of my heart in my veins pressed agains the insides of my ears and I`d hear the alternating vacuum inside my head. Back then my heart was closer to my head. This sound bothered me to the point where I couldn`t sleep. I stayed awake in bed, trying hard to concentrate, to slow down and perhaps stop that annoying sound I couldn`t comprehend. I had no idea that I`d die if it stopped.
In time, I learned to let my mind wander through other subjects, to keep me from paying attention to that sound. And eventually I`d fall asleep easily. And eventually, the problem became staying awake and not falling asleep. I completely forgot about that sound of my childhood.
Then last night, for the first time in a long while, I had a bout of insomnia. This time, the room was completely and utterly quiet. I noticed for the first time that the sound was gone. Nowadays it would have lulled me to sleep: rythmic sounds seems strangely soothing now. But I can only feel my heart through the pulse in my arm or in my chest. At times, after loads of physical activity, my whole body pulses. But I`ve never heard that sound again... Even though my heart screams, it is now too far from my head to be heard.

Another cloudy day.
I look out the window of the sixth floor down to the streets. There's a man walking a couple of dogs that are the same breed as Cowboy Bebop's Ein. I've seen them before. Sipping a cup of hot chocolate, I began to remember other interesting faces I've seen around.
I recently found a new, harder-but-cheaper route to the foundation. And it opened a new array of interesting faces to see each day. Theres a man on a newspaper stand on my way who looks ordinary, ignorant. One day I stopped to check out the magazines and we chatted briefly. What a voice... The kind you hear on the radio or on TV comercials. And I wondered what is he doing selling papers and magazines. What a waste...
On three or four occasions I ran into a blonde girl on those streets. Nothing too interesting about her except for the fact that she reminds me so vividly of the girls Renoir used to paint. Round cheeks, the soft skin, those strange eyes and lips that are, to me, Renoir's trademark.
Aside from that, nothing new. The cold keeps getting colder...

On the streets:
This week's cultural tip is the Monk's blog. The Monk is a journalism student at the university. He began his blog some time ago, around the same time we all began to blog. He began taking random pictures of things he found interesting, scenes of everyday life. But as his journalistic sense began to sharpen, he turned to more focused subjects, those things that outrage us and could be solved if people knew but are ignored by the big medias. All detailed through images that speak loudly and more directly than any written paragraph.
He is currently covering the situation of downtown residents who are getting evicted and brutalized by the police. A case that has been dismally covered in the big medias but obviously isn't getting much attention.
Fledgling journalists are so inspiring... Their outrage, their focus, their view of things, still untainted by corporate profits.

It's been a while, hasn't it??

What Finding Nemo Character are You?
brought to you by Quizilla
Ooh! Cool!

Red! Your eyes are red! You're a very distant
person, and you tend to hunger for power. In a
Manga, you'd be the sexy evil villan. Nothing
wrong with that, although you may want to think
about toning down the killing.

Lindas... E continuam trabalhando apesar do peso.

Why be intead of nothing. Tradução literal. Mas obviamente não soa bem...
A resposta que salta à mente: To be or not to be?
Why the being instead of the nothingness?

Talking to my grandmother (not the one from the atelier...), I came to an interesting idea: it's a relation between dreams and narrative writting. See, when you dream, all you get is the general idea of things. Images, at least for me, seem a little blurry and undetailed. Let's say a person, a close friend of mine, walks through a door into the room in my dream. What I actually see is a similar humanoid figure, very few details of the face. And I have this clear intuition of who it is. The room is another thing that remains blurry. Sometimes I have this false memory of where I am, a notion of a known place. But I none of the objects in the room are viewed in full detail unless it is absolutely necessary for the dream's plot. Writting is sometimes very similar. The author writes: The door swung open and X walked into the room. Let's ignore for a moment those pen-crazy writers who tend to describe everything from drapes on the windows to the ring on the character's hand. If this single sentence is given, I doubt anyone imagines this character in his/her full details. Some people like to imagine known faces as the characters in the plot. Even so, one never imagines the known face in all it's details. Just a simpler replica, and this identification in your head that this is character X. Furthermore, sometimes an author describes his character: I wonder if any reader actually imagines that description throughout the entire story. I seem to only lock onto the simpler details like hair color, eye color or size (fat, slim, tall, short...). The rest is usually ignored.
I guess what I mean is, writting is more about conveying general ideas than complete images, just like dreaming. You jump from one idea to the next in the same manner as oniric logic. And what matters is the general concepts, not the details.

Tudo um tanto quanto Letting the cables sleep.

Quick pointless literary note:
While we were at the restaurant with the guys from the italian course, one of them was talking about waking up in the morning and he eventually mentioned his alarm clock. Made me remember a witty little passage I never got to use on any of my old narratives:
The alarm clock woke me up with it's sour electronic sound.
Seemed like an interesting way to describe how an alarm clock sounds: sour. Except for those tacky ones that actualy say "wake up, it's XX:XX!" or some other corny sentence...
Anyway, pointles post...

And so, the italian course has ended. We went uot on the last day, after we got the grades. I got a very nice 9,3. In the end, we all wrote down our phone numbers, our e-mails... I even wrote down the adress to this blog.
I've done this so often. Writting down adresses of people I know I'm never going to see again. You cram all those adresses into a piece of paper and cherish it like your most priceless possession. Deep inside, you know you're never going to call them. or maybe you'll write once or twice. But then, eventually... Yet it always feels conforting to have that paper with all their data on it.
Once we went to summer camp. I met a bunch of people there and we got a nice gang toghether. When it was over, I had another one of those papers with about ten of those phone numbers. I never called. Then, one fine day, one of the girls calls me. I was immensely glad. And extremely surprised when she said she lived on the building in front of mine. Turns out almost all of them did. The others, obviously, dissapeared. This incident made me believe in these quick friendships for a while. Perhaps enough for me to keep in touch with old school friends like Lady Visentainer or other who have briefly graced my life like Nana-chan.

I have watched The Hours...
There is so much to be said about it. And in the words of one of the characters: all I could say wouldn't be enough to explain it. My Lioness had recomended it to me, saying it would explain much about us. Indeed. It explaind much about her. As if the roles had been written by someone who knew her all too well. It was her: sliced, dissected, analized and explained. Yet it was also a tiny part of every girl I ever dated. This said, there is virtualy no space for me in the movie. Except perhaps for one character's stubborness or another's rage.
Of all the characters, it was Virginia Woolf who resembled my Lioness the most. A sick version of her, but it was her all the same. Her view of things, her poetry. Her maddness and her desire to indulge everything that had caused it instead of being healed through apathy. But there was something that made her different from all the others, including the Lioness. I'll explain.
The other two characters seem to live for their men. One in 1951, a society of masquerade and false perfection, with men on the leading roles, faced with the challenge of making her husband a surprise party. The other, an alleged "independant" woman of the 21st century, living a lesbian relationship and mother to an in vitro child, but still catering to her sick former lover. See, even if she manages to excape conventional female roles, she still lives for a man. Both live for their men. Even though their men might be so much less than them. Glorifying men who are weaker, less intelligent, less capable. And fading away in the process. This is one thing I can comprehend but not relate. And I've seen it so often... Why must they cling to men to define themselves as women? Have men ever been simplified like this on a movie?
Virginia, on the other hand, seems to have her husband living for her. And I've met so few women in such condition...
I've experienced girls who lived for me. And I often wondered when would I live for someone. Oh, it's a complicated matter. To postpone your own personal quests in order to serve your lover. And then again, living for someone else has never made anyone truly happy. Nor complete. And that's why these characters run away from this sort of life. Or at times that sort of life runs away from them, jumping out the window...
And then there are the other things.
That philosphy about happiness that had the Lioness thinking for days (and me too, quite frankly...). The memory of... winters. In town that wasn't Wellfleet. And the music by Phillip Glass. Fit for scenes of serenity with a background of insanity. Suspense. Methodology. Tension. Order.

Continuing on my stroll through iconic terror movies, I recently watched Kubrick's version of The shining, with good ol' Jack Nicholson. For the fourth time, actually (yes, movies like that are what make me so psychotic...).
I want to know your theory
I just wanna see if I got this straight, so correct me if I'm wrong. Ok, so we have this family comming into this huge hotel to take care of it while it's shut down during winter. The father is a failed writer. The kid has ESP (Extra Sensorial Perception, mind powers such as telepathy, clairvoyance, telechinesis and so on...) and so does the black guy. Along the movie, I began questioning wether perhaps the father also has ESP. Let's take his side of the story. He come to the hotel to finally do some writting away from the distractions of the city. He hears what happened to the last family who took the job. For the following days, he finds himself still uninspired to write. The days go by and still not one page... As if that wasn't enought, the wife starts bitching about their son, about being lonely, about everything. That stress, plus his fear of being in that ghostly hotel all by himself gets him into seing things, imagining characters (like my Marcus...). Among them, the murderous father of the former family. As the days progress, still no inspiration. Frustration builds up and he begins seeing more of that guy. The buttler. He starts to identify with him. All the while, the kid starts getting all sorts of weird impressions about the place and about what he heard. So both of them have all this energy in them. My guess is, by the time the buttles convinces the father to butcher his own family, all that energy starts materializing things and making things happen. Like when the buttler opens the door for the father, freeing him. Or all the other things that the mother sees in the end of the movie. Even that last photograph, where it's clear that the father has come to such a level of identification, that he believes he is the buttler.
Got any other views on this?
By the way, Kubrick's photography and sript are excellent! I hear they trashed the movie on this new version that came out recently... I don't even feel like watching.
By the way, I just had to do this:
All work and no play make Pan a dull boy.
All work and no play make Pan a dull boy.
All work and no play make Pan a dull boy.
All work and no play make Pan a dull boy.

A história deles é triste. Veja..."

Some artists, specificaly painters, depict entire inner worlds. It's been a tradition ever since surrealism. Worlds with their own characters and settings, each with it's unique meaning, usualy only grasped by the artist himself. You can easily understand the inner world of Sandra Cinto, or my dear Edward Hopper if you see enough of their works. Tonight, I think I got a glimpse of a part of my world.
A year ago, as I listened to Letting the cables sleep (Bush), I had this strange feeling. With the speed of thought, I witnessed a bunch of images put toghether. I saw an irrecognizeable face of a girl with short hair, lying on her back on an unmade bed, glancing at me. The sheets draped to the floor. It was late at night and she was criss-crossed by beams of neon lights from the outside filtered by the curtains in the window into some sort of squared pattern. At the same time, I could see this building, all windows were regular squares, no lights inside, making them pitch dark. The neon lights in the city below would turn that darkness into a light purple. Tiny LED lights would blip in different colors all along the vortices of the squares. Still, there was a third image of a naked child standing some corner of the city, lit only by the lonely light of a street lamp. There was this general mood of a before-dawn stillness. Those hours when there's virtually no one on the streets but one or two cars eventually drive by at high speeds...
Overwhelmed by that strange feeling, I bought some canvas and began painting it. It took quite a while to organize everything that had come to me and I lost much of it along the way. In the end, I had a canvas I entitled Letting the cables sleep.
But I hated it. Because it seemed I wasn't dexterous enough to paint it at the time. Furthermore, I didn't stick to the original idea. For the girl, who had been place high atop the cancas, upside-down, I had used my Blonde Muse's face. It was her portrait I was doing at the time and I knew her face well enough. But no matter how well I knew it, the results sucked. I also lost the squared pattern and the entire second image. The little boy was there, at the bottom. Staring blankly upwards at the girl. My lack of expertise with my colours made me mix his flesh tones with black for the shadows, resulting in a gray skin.
I have no idea what became of that canvas. Eventualy, in my clumsiness, I misplaced it somewhere. Never saw it again. Then recently, after a lazy afternoon with Tink, I sketched a few doodles to use her as the girl in the sky.
Tonight, as I was coming home from Tink's, I was listening to Cowboy Bebop's See you Space Cowboy. The streets were almost empty, with those same cars at high speeds. And in those first saxophone notes, there was this image of another naked gray child, standing on the ledge of a building. The ledges created that same squared pattern with LED lights flickering. The windows were still dark. The night sky had stars this time. And the child would stare blankly at the sky again. I imagined there would be a presence there, like the girl in the other one. But I couldn't make it out this time.
I think my inner world is a neon-lit ghost city, with square-patterned buildings and naked gray-skinned children running around. Looking at the skies will lead you into other space/time junctions: bedrooms in those long minutes after sex. And these gray boys keep staring at the sky in hopes that they'll one day grow up and be the men in those bedrooms. And then the presence of those women in there won't seem so overpowering.
*Sigh*
Forgive my senseless yaking. I don't think you care about naked gray-skinned children, girls in the sky or neon-lit ghost cities. Doubt anyone will read this far anyway. But I just had to write this down for the record.

After lunch that same day, I was dumping all the leftovers. And as usual, I had left my pickle slices inside the BigMac box (why do they keep using pickles if every one takes the slices out??). And suddenly I had this comic, yet unethical daydream about some homeless guy literaly swiming in a garbage dump and finding this box, that dismally resembles an oyster, and then opening it to eat the "pearls" inside...
When I was a child, I thought there would come a day when something specific would happen and I would hence be understood as "an adult". That there was this one specific event that would turn me into a grown-up overnight. The world would then look a lot smaller, because I'd be bigger; and my ideas would magically be more mature. And then I learned about teenage and that time when you're neither one nor the other. When you're too old to play the same old games and yet too young to play the new and interesting ones...
This weekend I ventured into a McDonald's for lunch. And that once wonderful and enticing burger odour seemed strangely nauseating. I came to grips with the fact that I no longer like McDonald's. Or any of the fast-foods for that matter. I mean, I still eat at those every now and then. But given the choice, I'd easily choose something else. Same goes for soda pops... I'll take juice over those any day.
Well, the change didn't exactly happen overnight. But going into that store and being nauseated by that characteristic smell sure did come as a surprise. The same surprise that hit me when I found the street I lived in when I was a child. That whole block, that seemed like the entire universe to me, was now just another block amidst the city. It was nothing. Tiny. Puny. Because I was bigger.
