Browsing through one of those japanese comics. Manga: they come in a thick book where each story is printed in a different monochromatic scheme. The only full-color pics are on the first few pages. And that's where I found the pictures of one of those teenage japanese models who's quick careers nevertheless make an abnormal success among japanese teens. They are worshiped as godesses for a while, desired by any boy with enough age to furiously think of sex; and then they are forgotten just as quickly as they got to stardom. It's no big mistery: they all look strangely familiar, strangely the same. Clear skin, those very pink lips, those tiny bodies that seem to have the same impact as those of the huge western top models. Switching an old one for a new one shouldn't be too hard.
But perhaps what really intrests me is how they try to americanize love. Not as if they were only doing so to fit into the global stereotype, but as if they were really intended on becoming americanized, as if they really liked it. I've learned that they never actualy had a word for "kiss". They adapted the american word and invented "kissu", since they never end a word in a consonant. From then on, they forgot the sensuous, insinuating yet subservient style of the geishas and started printing magazines where porcelain-skinned teenage girls lie on the floor in full-body bathing suits (bikinis still seem a little too much for them, fortunately) and look at the camera with innocent puppy eyes as if they didn't exactly know what men think about beautiful women in bathing suits. I guess in this case, malice is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Each print is then subtitled with somewhat naive words of approval like "cute!" or "so great!", folowed by the unmemorizable names of the girls, filled with A's. I marvel at the cultural fusion present in those images: the need to advertise sexuality of the west, and the discretion of the east. But I also seem curious about the way this tender sexuality benefits the model. After all, by not showing her body much, she obliges us to judge her face, her beauty, even if they don't differ much from model to model. Western models and their overexposed nudity usually lead us to appreciating the body, regardless of what head sits on top of those bare shoulders.
Anyway, just another pointless post...
Bits and pieces of my life that everyone ignores when I speak, but someone reads when I write.

P. Os acidentes?
R. Sim. A cor, textura, peso, tamanho...
P. Foi difícil efeituar a transformação?
R. Quando eu coloquei água no copo.

This is pretty darn cute, once you understand who they are... Courtesy of Errant Story.
The interesting thing here is that all those "Cartoon cartoons", as they are called, were a sort of a mockery of japanese anime in one way or another. Consciously or not, the author of Errant Story reversed tho whole situation by turning the mockery into the very thing it satirizes...
Do you get what I'm saying?

Thinking
Most people think they Think. But they don't. They have the opinions that the alleged "common sense" tells them to have. Likewise, they'll reject everything that has become so common everybody is doing too, and claim to be different, individualized. And they will fear what is truly completely different. In such scenario, there is little or no room for creativity. One basks in the warm comfort of the ordinary, the hum of routine, of everyday trivia. Acting like a machine to fulfill the daily chores, one ceases to Think, if one ver did Think at all... Thinking isn't what you do in school. School Thinks for you (and allegedly Thinks with you, but since all homeworks are always the same, that's really all bullshit...). Thinking seldom is what actually goes on in the universities. But there are some geniuses that do start Thinking there. Thinking comes after the awakening. After you've grown tired of asking people at your side "what do you want to do" or "where do you want to go" every weekend. It happens after you've grown tired of doing everything the common, simple, boring way and start Thinking up alternatives, innovations. And ultimately, when you cease to tell yourself you are the reason for all your failures and start acknowledging you may just be the fource of all your solutions.
Oh, come... I'm not implying I Think either.

I have the peculiar habit of avoiding turning off the radio before the end of the song. Unless of course it's something unnaturally boring. I guess it's something similar to Tink's habit of not leaving the theatre before the ending credits of a movie finish. See, someone worked hard on that song, and turning it off in the middle would be like showing people only half of one of my paintings... Music should be listened through and through. Every song is a ride, a dream. The correct soundtrack for an occasion can alter your mood as powerfully as any drug.
But it got me to thinking about car stereos and how most people don't actually listen to the music. They just need a more rythmic background sound to their driving than the chaotic street noises. Come to think of it, that's probably why some radio stations take the liberty of snipping off bits of the songs to make them shorter: they know few people are actually listening and they can crunch more song into one program that way. Heck, they tore off the best part of Aerosmith's Amazin': the ending guitar solo. They stripped Guns and Roses' November Rain of it's fabulous ending with the piano and that really somber tone to it.
If people were actually listening, there would be more frequent complains about that...

Surreal revelations XII:
It occurs to me that getting a job has much in common with getting a girlfriend.
Let's beggin with the obvious. You show up, you talk about yourself, you listen to what the other part has to say, and if the other part likes you, bingo! You're in. That's pretty much the scheme of things in both cases. This other part (henceforth known as "the other", as opposed to "you") will eventually get on your nerves and provide you with a considerable amount of stress, but likewise the other will also bring you a considerable amount of joy. You should never ever talk negatively about the other part, not even to good friends. These things get around and if the other part hears all that crap, the relationship ends. This obviously explains why I will not be writting about my job (once I get one...) in here: this blog has done enough damage to my love life and I don't need that damage done to my career.
Getting an'other...
Girls and companies ("others") come in various degrees. From those that are great, wonderful, almost godly and completely unnatainable (but nevertheless you still make a flirty pass and get turned down...); going through those that are just the right thing for you (although seldom do you recognize them...); and finally those you say to yourself "I'm not THAT desperate...". Choosing them is an art few people can master. I'm not saying I'm any good at it... Just don't make the choice the most important thing, or the frustration will be just as big: you convince yourself you were made for that specific other, just to get laughed at when you finally muster enough courage to go and flirt... Remember: there are plenty of fish in the ocean. Choose yours, build the other's trust in you and then move in for the kill.
Another good comparison is the fact that most others will only accept you if you come highly reccomended by someone they trust. References are everything to some. If the other hears good words about you from someone the other trusts, you're half way there. After all, you are both making a commitment. These pacts aren't made with any stranger in the street, you know...
Finally, there are certain specific officialities you go through in both cases. A kiss seals a commitment with a girl. And I'm not sure yet, but I guess a bunch of signatures seal the commitment with a company. Hope I get that doubt settled soon...
There are a few advices to consider about living with the other.
You should gently, indirectly even, check what it the other's position about you flirting with third parties. That is, few are the girls who tolerate their boys aimlessly flirting with other girls and few are the companies that will tolerate their employees researching job oportunities on other companies. Even if their is no intention of actually swaping this relationship for another. Even if it's just out of curiosity. Never.
You should never end a relationship badly. Who knows when you'll need the favors of a former other. Yes, I know I haven't followed this advice lately. But check this out: Tinkerbell was my first girl and now we're back after years apart...
Another advice, this one from my father: allways agree. Even if the other is wrong. It saves time and quarelling. And besides, once the other is convinced of the faux pas, you will be lavished with compensations and "I'm sorry"s.
The other always goes through the bad days, the PMSs, the finantial dificulties... Sit still, don't create a fuss and try not to be a nuisance to the other. Once the storm subsides, you will have endured and the relationship will emerge stronger.
Look at me: writing as if I had all this know-how about both areas... It's not much a matter of know-how really. It's more a matter of common sense. Can anyone back me up here?

One day, while leaving my building, I glanced back at my appartment, on the sixth floor. It was a common gesture, one I do almost every time I leave, instinctively. Perhaps to check if I did turn off all the lights. But this time, my glance wandered upward while I strolled down the street, finally reaching the top of the building. It popped the question in my head, the desire to go up there and take a look at things from a different perspective. Up I went the very next day, as soon as I got some spare time. The main elevator wouldn't take me there, so I took the service elevator up to the last floor and then out through the fire escape. The heavy iron door opened easily: I thought it might have been locked. I climbed another small set of stairs mounted on the wall to my right and I was up there. Close to the lightning rods, the satelite dishes and a few other antenae. I looked around, to certify myself there were no surveillance cameras allerting the building personel of my little adventure. Nothing. And then I looked further away, into the city. Where I live, most of the buildings have the same height, due to the airplane route right above us. They can't be any higher according to the law. So I had a long view of the horizon. The vastness of the city. One does gain a different perspective from up there. The neighboring buildings seem close enough to leap to, like in the Matrix movies. And there is this calm, almost zen feeling in the air. It feels somewhat unreal. As if it wasn't real life, but a kind of video game, a simulation. In video games, it doesn't matter what's in the bottom of the abiss. One can't see what's down there. One only knows it's better to stay up here. It's an entirely different notion of space, of vastness. I could sit there for hours in the sun. Just looking far away at all the tiny details in the background. I pictured myself shooting some awesome home-made videos from up there. But most of all, I muttered to myself that I should really go up there more often. A quiet place for myself. A place of meditation.
And that's when one of the janitors showed up behind me on the tiny stairs and giggled in disbelief. He told me that it was dangerous up there and blah, blah, blah... How had he known I was up there? On my way down, passing through the big iron door, I looked carefully at it's edges. There it was: a tiny magnetic sensor on the upper edge of the door. I had studied those in electronics class in school. Easy to bipass if I had a magnet. But then I figured it would be nearly impossible to jam that sensor, due to it's location on the outside. All is not lost though... I'll find a way.
